golden delicious oatmeal

made without a hint of apple, this is a lil' something i came up with one night while downing a warm cup of goodnight goodness known as golden milk. never heard of it? well, it's a heavenly mixture of heated milk, turmeric, black pepper, oil (coconut, almond, or ghee are most recommended), cardamom, cinnamon, and a touch of honey. very popular in ayurvedic circles, this drink does so much more than taste amazing and help you get a good night's rest. the main ingredient, turmeric, is like the superman of spices. it has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and so many more healing qualities - i'm not saying that you'll never get sick again. but. what's that saying about an ounce of prevention? why not a bowl?

anyhoo. a few nights back, i began to wonder how this concoction would go down at breakfast. like - why should i limit my intake of this deliciousness to only just before bed? and that's when it came to me: 'make it into oatmeal.' so i did. and here's how the breakfast was done:

golden delicious oatmeal
oats - plain ol' fashioned oats - no instant or quick cook madness happening in my kitchen
turmeric paste - 1/4 to 1/2 tsp per serving is recommended
a few pinches of salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and black pepper, to taste
fresh chopped ginger
the milk and oil of your choosing - i used half/half and ghee
chopped pear
raisins
honey

add the oats to salted boiling water and reduce heat. add ginger and pears once the water calms down. when water is mostly absorbed, add spices, a splash of milk, and about a tsp. of oil per serving. remove from heat, and add raisins and honey (or your sweetener of choice). freaking delicious. and uber healthy. a great start to any morning, not just in the throes of winter when a lil' extra germ fighting surely won't hurt nobody. enjoy!
